Homeschooling in New Zealand
How homeschooling works in New Zealand
Homeschooling is legal in New Zealand when your child holds an exemption from enrolment from the Ministry of Education.
In practice that means applying to the Ministry for an exemption before you start, showing how you'll teach your child at least as regularly and as well as a registered school, then keeping going with your own learning programme. Our guides walk through each step and link to the official pages.
- 1Read the rulesUnderstand the exemption and what the Ministry looks for.
- 2Apply before you withdrawYour child stays enrolled until the exemption is granted.
- 3Plan your programmeUse our lessons, lesson plans and timetable to map out learning.
- 4Keep simple recordsLog learning as you go and print summaries whenever you need them.
Our promises to families
Honest content
Every lesson and guide shows when it was created and whether it has been reviewed. We never claim our materials meet registration requirements.
Private by design
Children are nicknames and year levels β nothing more. No ads for children, no selling data, and you can delete everything at any time.
Healthy learning habits
No manipulative streaks or endless feeds. Short sessions, real-world activities and plenty of time away from screens.
Common questions
Is homeschooling legal in New Zealand?
Yes. Parents can home educate when their child has an exemption from enrolment granted by the Ministry of Education. Our exemption guide explains the process in plain English and links to the Ministry's official pages β always check the current requirements with the Ministry.
Is Success Homeschool really free?
Yes. The lesson library, lesson plan templates, timetable generator, resource directory, practice checks and parent dashboard are free. Success Tutoring offers paid tutoring for families who want it, but the core platform stays free.
Are the lessons based on The New Zealand Curriculum?
Not yet. Our lessons were written around Australian Curriculum strands and are matched to New Zealand year levels by age (NZ Year 1 is the first year of school). They're a helpful starting point, but check them against your own learning programme. Every lesson shows its review status.
How do you protect my children's information?
Child profiles only need a nickname and year level. We never sell data, never show ads to children and never use behavioural advertising. You can export or permanently delete your family's data at any time.
I've never taught before. Can I still use this?
Absolutely. Every lesson includes plain-English explanations, worked examples, practice questions with an answer guide, common mistakes to watch for and tips written for parents rather than teachers.
