Year 2 homeschool curriculum
In Year 1, children extend their counting well past 100 and begin to see two-digit numbers as tens and ones. They add and subtract small numbers using objects, fingers and simple strategies, and they measure and compare lengths using repeated informal units. They also explore patterns, shapes, simple data and the language of chance.
In Year 1, children extend their phonics knowledge to sounds written with two letters, such as 'sh', 'ch' and 'th', so they can read and spell a much wider range of words. They learn to name people, places and things (nouns) and actions (verbs), and they start to answer questions about what they have read. Writing grows from single sentences into short recounts, and shared stories help children talk about characters and settings.
In Year 1, children look closely at the features of animals and plants and where they live. They change the shape of materials by bending, squashing and stretching, notice changes in the sky and landscape, and explore how sounds are made. They begin recording what they observe with simple drawings and tables.
