Year 6 homeschool curriculum
In Year 5, learners extend their number skills to multiply larger numbers, find equivalent fractions and work with decimals in everyday contexts such as money. They calculate the area and perimeter of rectangles, describe transformations of shapes, interpret data displays and run chance experiments. Lessons use everyday Australian contexts and simple household materials.
In Year 5, students build complex sentences by combining main and subordinate clauses, giving their writing more precision and variety. They analyse how authors use figurative language such as similes, metaphors and personification, and they read critically, separating facts from opinions. Students also refine spelling of homophones, use apostrophes for possession and consider how the narrator's point of view shapes a story.
In Year 5, students investigate how the features and behaviours of living things help them survive, compare the properties of solids, liquids and gases, and explore our solar system. They investigate how light travels, forms shadows and reflects, and learn how scientists' ideas develop over time.
