Homeschool โ Australia โ Year 3
Year 3 homeschool curriculum
In Year 3, children work with numbers into the thousands and use place value to add and subtract larger numbers. They build fluency with multiplication facts and the division facts that go with them, and they start measuring with metric units such as centimetres, kilograms and litres. They also explore fractions, shapes and angles, data displays and chance experiments.
In Year 3, students learn spelling rules for adding suffixes such as -ing and -ed, and they start to join clauses to write compound sentences. They plan and write narratives with a clear orientation, complication and resolution, and read to identify main ideas and supporting details. Poetry, adverbs and apostrophes for contractions round out a year of growing control over written language.
In Year 3, students sort living and non-living things and group living things by their features. They investigate how heating and cooling change materials from solid to liquid and back, model how Earth's spin causes day and night, and explore how heat moves. They begin planning simple fair tests.
In Year 3, children look at how communities remember and celebrate. They learn about Australian commemorative days and symbols, the diversity of First Nations Countries and languages, and how their local community has changed over time. In the Australian Curriculum v9.0 this learning sits within the HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) learning area.
In Year 3, learners investigate places in Australia and in neighbouring countries. They compare climates across Australia, locate Australia's near neighbours, and examine similarities and differences between places, including the diversity of First Nations Countries. They build map skills such as using grid references, legends and compass directions. In the Australian Curriculum v9.0 this learning sits within the HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) learning area.
