Homeschool โ Australia โ Year 2
Year 2 homeschool curriculum
In Year 2, children work with numbers up to 1000 using hundreds, tens and ones, and become more fluent with addition and subtraction facts. They meet multiplication and division as equal groups and fair sharing, and begin to name halves, quarters and eighths. They also measure, explore shapes and position, collect data and talk about chance.
In Year 2, children learn the different ways long vowel sounds can be spelled, which helps them read longer and less predictable words. They use adjectives to make their writing more descriptive and join ideas with conjunctions. Reading moves beyond finding facts on the page to working out what an author suggests but does not say directly. Children also explore how stories are built and enjoy the patterns and sounds of poetry.
In Year 2, children learn that living things grow, change and have young that often look like their parents. They mix materials and observe what happens, think about how we use and save Earth's resources such as water, and investigate how pushes and pulls make things start, stop and change direction.
In Year 2, children discover that the past is all around them. They investigate old buildings, monuments and places in their local area, learn that First Nations Australians have deep and continuing connections to places, and explore how technology such as transport and communication has changed daily life. In the Australian Curriculum v9.0 this learning sits within the HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) learning area.
In Year 2, children zoom out from their local area to Australia and the world. They locate the continents and oceans, the states and territories of Australia, and learn how places are connected to other places near and far. They learn that Country and Place are central to the identity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In the Australian Curriculum v9.0 this learning sits within the HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) learning area.
