What home education means in SA
In South Australia, children of compulsory school age must be enrolled at and attend school unless an exemption applies. Home education is one reason an exemption can be approved.
Parents who home educate take on overall responsibility for their child's education, including providing a suitable learning program, resources, a suitable learning environment and opportunities for social interaction.

How to apply
- Read the department's Guide to home education in South Australia.
- Prepare a learning program that addresses all 8 learning areas and shows planning for 12 months, with three learning goals for each child.
- Submit your application to the department's home education team.
- A home education officer contacts you to arrange a home visit during business hours in school terms. They meet the parent or main supervisor and the child, and look at the learning environment.
After submitting, you may ask the principal of your child's current school for a short exemption from attendance (described in the guide as 4 weeks) so home education can begin while your application is assessed.

Reviews and renewal
Exemptions for home education are usually granted for 12 months, and may be shorter if evidence of learning is limited.
Before your exemption ends you complete a home education review form showing how the criteria were met and setting learning goals for the next year. A home education officer then arranges a review visit.
Incomplete forms or not being available for the review visit can delay or prevent renewal, so keep good records of your child's learning throughout the year.

Moving from school to home education
Your child stays enrolled at school while you apply. Speak with the school principal about a short-term exemption from attendance while the department assesses your application.
Families in rural or remote areas may be given an interim exemption if the home visit takes longer to arrange.
