60-minute lesson
Year 9 Science lesson plans
In Year 8, students learn that cells are the basic units of living things and that cells form tissues, organs and body systems. They use the particle model to explain states of matter, distinguish elements, compounds and mixtures, and tell physical changes from chemical changes. They explore the rock cycle and investigate how energy is transferred and transformed.
- Biological sciencesCells: the building blocks of lifeStudents compare plant and animal cells, identify structures such as the nucleus, cell membrane, cell wall and chloroplasts, and learn how microscopes revealed cells.Create plan template
- Biological sciencesBody systems working togetherStudents explore how the digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems work together to supply cells with nutrients and oxygen and remove wastes.Create plan template
- Chemical sciencesThe particle model of matterStudents use the idea that all matter is made of tiny moving particles to explain the properties of solids, liquids and gases, diffusion and expansion.Create lesson planView lesson
- Chemical sciencesElements, compounds and mixturesStudents distinguish elements, compounds and mixtures using particle diagrams and simple chemical formulas such as H2O and CO2.Create plan template
- Chemical sciencesPhysical and chemical changeStudents identify evidence of chemical change, such as gas production, colour change and temperature change, and compare it with physical change.Create lesson planView lesson
- Earth and space sciencesThe rock cycleStudents explain how igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks form and change over time, with Australian examples such as Uluru's sandstone and Wave Rock's granite.Create plan template
- Physical sciencesEnergy transfers and transformationsStudents identify forms of energy, trace transfers and transformations in devices such as solar panels and kettles, and represent them with flow diagrams.Create plan template
