60-minute lesson
Year 8 Science lesson plans
In Year 7, students classify living things and model feeding relationships in food webs. They separate mixtures using techniques such as filtration and evaporation, explain seasons, Moon phases and tides using the Sun–Earth–Moon system, and analyse balanced and unbalanced forces. They write aims and hypotheses and identify variables in investigations.
- Biological sciencesClassifying living thingsStudents use observable features and dichotomous keys to classify organisms, including Australian animals such as monotremes, marsupials and placental mammals.Create plan template
- Biological sciencesFood webs and ecosystemsStudents build food webs for Australian ecosystems, such as a eucalypt woodland or a coral reef, and predict the effects of removing or introducing a species.Create plan template
- Chemical sciencesSeparating mixturesStudents distinguish pure substances from mixtures and use filtration, evaporation, decanting, magnetic separation and paper chromatography to separate them.Create lesson planView lesson
- Earth and space sciencesSeasons, Moon phases and tidesStudents model the Sun–Earth–Moon system to explain why Australia has summer in December, why the Moon's appearance changes over a month and what causes tides.Create lesson planView lesson
- Physical sciencesBalanced and unbalanced forcesStudents use force arrows to show that balanced forces leave motion unchanged and unbalanced forces cause speeding up, slowing down or changing direction, including the role of gravity.Create plan template
- Science inquiryWriting a hypothesisStudents write testable aims and hypotheses, identify independent, dependent and controlled variables, and evaluate the fairness of investigations.Create plan template
