40-minute lesson
Year 5 Mathematics lesson plans
In Year 4, learners build fluency with multiplication and division facts, work with larger numbers and begin to see how fractions and decimals connect. They measure and calculate with time, describe shapes and angles, collect and display data, and use everyday language to describe how likely events are. Practical, hands-on activities around the home help make these ideas concrete.
- NumberPlace value to tens of thousandsRead, write, order and round numbers up to 99 999, explaining the value of each digit using ones, tens, hundreds, thousands and tens of thousands.Create plan template
- NumberMultiplication and division factsRecall multiplication facts up to 10 × 10 and use them to work out related division facts, using strategies such as doubling and fact families.Create lesson planView lesson
- NumberFractions and decimalsCount by fractions, compare fractions with related denominators and connect tenths and hundredths to decimals, including in money.Create plan template
- AlgebraNumber patterns and missing numbersFind and continue patterns made by adding or multiplying, and work out unknown values in number sentences such as 6 × ? = 42.Create plan template
- MeasurementTime and elapsed timeRead times using am and pm, convert between units of time and work out how long events last by counting on in easy jumps.Create lesson planView lesson
- SpaceAngles and shapesCompare angles with a right angle, describing them as acute, right, obtuse, straight or a full turn, and identify angles in shapes and objects.Create plan template
- StatisticsCollecting and displaying dataPlan a simple survey, record results in a table and show the data in a column graph or picture graph, then describe what it shows.Create plan template
- ProbabilityChance and likelihoodDescribe how likely everyday events are using words such as impossible, unlikely, even chance, likely and certain, and test predictions with simple experiments.Create lesson planView lesson
