35-minute lesson
Year 4 Mathematics lesson plans
In Year 3, children work with numbers into the thousands and use place value to add and subtract larger numbers. They build fluency with multiplication facts and the division facts that go with them, and they start measuring with metric units such as centimetres, kilograms and litres. They also explore fractions, shapes and angles, data displays and chance experiments.
- NumberPlace value to 10 000Reading, writing, building and ordering four-digit numbers using thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, and regrouping numbers in flexible ways.Create lesson planView lesson
- AlgebraMultiplication and division factsLearning the multiplication facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 using patterns and doubling, and using each fact to find the related division facts.Create lesson planView lesson
- MeasurementMeasuring with metric unitsMeasuring and comparing length in centimetres and metres, mass in grams and kilograms, and capacity in millilitres and litres, using rulers, scales and jugs.Create lesson planView lesson
- NumberAdding and subtracting larger numbersUsing place value, jump strategies on a number line and partitioning to add and subtract two- and three-digit numbers, and checking answers with the inverse operation.Create plan template
- NumberExploring fractionsMaking halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and other unit fractions by folding paper and sharing collections, and counting fractions such as one quarter, two quarters, three quarters.Create plan template
- SpaceShapes, angles and mapsMaking and describing three-dimensional objects, comparing angles with a right angle, and using simple grid maps to describe locations and routes.Create plan template
- StatisticsData tables and graphsPlanning a survey, recording results in a tally table and showing them in a column graph or picture graph, then describing what the data shows.Create plan template
- ProbabilityChance experimentsRunning simple experiments with coins, dice and spinners, recording outcomes and comparing what happened with what was expected.Create plan template
