60-minute lesson
Year 11 Science lesson plans
In Year 10, students learn how DNA and genes carry inherited information and how natural selection drives evolution. They use the periodic table to explain patterns in elements, investigate factors that affect reaction rates, explore the evidence for the Big Bang and Earth's global systems, and use Newton's laws to describe and predict motion. Investigations become more independent, with attention to error and uncertainty.
- Biological sciencesDNA, genes and inheritanceStudents describe the structure of DNA, how genes code for proteins, and use Punnett squares to predict simple patterns of inheritance.Create plan template
- Biological sciencesEvolution by natural selectionStudents explain natural selection using variation, inheritance and differential survival, with evidence from fossils, comparative anatomy, DNA and Australia's unique marsupials.Create plan template
- Chemical sciencesThe periodic tableStudents explain how the periodic table is organised by atomic number and electron arrangement, and use groups and periods to predict properties.Create plan template
- Chemical sciencesRates of reactionStudents use collision theory to explain how temperature, surface area, concentration and catalysts affect how fast reactions happen, testing effervescent tablets at home.Create lesson planView lesson
- Earth and space sciencesThe universe and the Big BangStudents describe the structure of the universe and the evidence for the Big Bang theory, including red shift and cosmic microwave background radiation, and Australia's role in radio astronomy.Create plan template
- Earth and space sciencesGlobal systems and climateStudents explain how the carbon cycle links the atmosphere, oceans, land and living things, and evaluate evidence for climate change and its effects in Australia.Create plan template
- Physical sciencesMotion and Newton's lawsStudents calculate speed and acceleration, interpret motion graphs and apply Newton's three laws of motion to everyday situations such as car safety.Create lesson planView lesson
