60-minute lesson
Year 10 Science lesson plans
In Year 9, students investigate how the nervous and endocrine systems help the body respond to change, and how matter and energy flow through ecosystems. They explore atomic structure, investigate acids and bases, explain Earth's features using plate tectonics and analyse how heat is transferred by conduction, convection and radiation. They collect and analyse data with attention to accuracy and repeated trials.
- Biological sciencesThe nervous system and reaction timeStudents learn how the nervous system detects and responds to stimuli, compare reflexes with voluntary responses, and measure their reaction time with a falling ruler.Create lesson planView lesson
- Biological sciencesEcosystems and the carbon cycleStudents trace how energy flows and matter cycles through ecosystems, including photosynthesis, respiration and decomposition in the carbon cycle.Create plan template
- Chemical sciencesAtoms and isotopesStudents describe the structure of atoms in terms of protons, neutrons and electrons, define isotopes and learn about radioactive decay and its uses in medicine and dating.Create plan template
- Chemical sciencesAcids and basesStudents use a homemade red cabbage indicator to classify household substances as acidic, neutral or basic, and investigate neutralisation.Create lesson planView lesson
- Earth and space sciencesPlate tectonicsStudents explain how moving tectonic plates cause earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain building, and why the Australian plate is moving north at several centimetres per year.Create plan template
- Physical sciencesHeat transfer: conduction, convection and radiationStudents explain heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation using the particle model, and apply it to home insulation and keeping cool in Australian summers.Create plan template
