30-minute lesson
Year 2 Mathematics lesson plans
In Year 2, children work with numbers up to 1000 using hundreds, tens and ones, and become more fluent with addition and subtraction facts. They meet multiplication and division as equal groups and fair sharing, and begin to name halves, quarters and eighths. They also measure, explore shapes and position, collect data and talk about chance.
- NumberPlace value to 1000Reading, writing, ordering and building numbers to 1000 as hundreds, tens and ones, and finding 10 more, 10 less, 100 more and 100 less.Create lesson planView lesson
- AlgebraAddition and subtraction factsBecoming fluent with addition and subtraction facts within 20, using fact families to find missing numbers and writing number sentences for everyday stories.Create lesson planView lesson
- NumberEqual groups and sharingExploring multiplication as equal groups and arrays, and division as sharing equally or making groups of a given size, using real objects.Create lesson planView lesson
- NumberHalves, quarters and eighthsFolding and cutting shapes and sharing collections to make halves, quarters and eighths, and understanding that the parts of a fraction must be equal.Create plan template
- MeasurementMeasuring length, mass and timeMeasuring and comparing objects with uniform informal units, using a balance to compare mass, and reading time to the half hour and quarter hour on analogue clocks.Create plan template
- SpaceShapes and positionDescribing and drawing two-dimensional shapes by their sides and corners, and giving and following directions to move between places on a simple map.Create plan template
- StatisticsCollecting and showing dataAsking a survey question, recording answers with tally marks or lists and showing the results in a simple picture graph or column of objects.Create plan template
- ProbabilityDescribing chanceTalking about whether everyday events are likely, unlikely, certain or impossible, and testing simple predictions with coin tosses or coloured counters in a bag.Create plan template
