30-minute lesson
Year 1 Mathematics lesson plans
In Year 1, children extend their counting well past 100 and begin to see two-digit numbers as tens and ones. They add and subtract small numbers using objects, fingers and simple strategies, and they measure and compare lengths using repeated informal units. They also explore patterns, shapes, simple data and the language of chance.

- NumberAdding and subtracting within 20Solving simple addition and subtraction stories within 20 using objects, counting on, counting back, doubles and fact families.Create lesson planView lesson
- MeasurementMeasuring length with informal unitsMeasuring and comparing the lengths of objects by laying equal-sized units, such as paperclips or blocks, end to end with no gaps or overlaps.Create lesson planView lesson
- NumberSharing and groupingSharing a collection equally between people and making equal groups, using real objects to see that some collections share evenly and some have leftovers.Create plan template
- AlgebraSkip counting and patternsContinuing and creating repeating patterns, and skip counting by twos, fives and tens to notice the number patterns that appear.Create plan template
- SpaceShapes and objectsDescribing and sorting flat shapes and everyday objects such as boxes, balls and cans by their features, including faces, edges and whether they roll or stack.Create plan template
- StatisticsCollecting and showing dataAsking simple yes/no or choice questions, collecting answers from family members and showing the results with objects or simple drawings.Create plan template
- ProbabilityChance in everyday lifeUsing words such as will happen, might happen and will not happen to talk about familiar events, such as the sun setting or rain tomorrow.Create plan template
