The main costs
- Curriculum. The biggest choice. Free online lessons and library books cost nothing; a complete boxed curriculum for one child can cost hundreds of dollars a year. Buying used and reusing materials for younger siblings cuts this a lot.
- Supplies and technology. Paper, art and science supplies, a printer and a reliable device and internet connection.
- Activities and outings. Co-op fees, sports, music lessons, museum memberships and field trips. Many Texas museums and parks run discounted or free homeschool days.
- Tutoring and classes. Optional, but common for high school math and science, test prep, or when a child needs targeted help.
- Testing. Optional in Texas, but some families pay for an annual standardized test or college admission tests.
- Income. For many families the largest cost is indirect: one parent working fewer hours. It's worth planning for honestly.
Texas Education Freedom Accounts: $2,000 for homeschoolers
Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), created by Senate Bill 2 in 2025 and run by the Texas Comptroller, give eligible homeschool students $2,000 a year from the 2026–27 school year. The money is spent through the program's approved payment system on approved education expenses — it is not paid out as cash.
The first year was heavily oversubscribed: by August 2026 more than 100,000 students were funded and more than 100,000 were on the waitlist. Check EducationFreedom.Texas.gov for the approved-expense list, application dates and current rules.

- Look for homeschool days at museums, science centers and state parks.
- Buy used curriculum and sell it on when you're done.
