Homeschooling in Texas
How homeschooling works in Texas
Homeschooling is legal in Texas. Homeschools are treated as private schools: there is no registration, but you must teach a bona fide curriculum in visual form covering reading, spelling, grammar, math and good citizenship.
In practice you choose your own curriculum and schedule, withdraw your child in writing if they're enrolled in a public school, and keep simple records of what you teach. There's no state testing or approval, and eligible families can apply for Texas Education Freedom Account funding. Our Texas guide walks through each step and links to official sources.
- 1Know the lawTeach reading, spelling, grammar, math and good citizenship from a visual curriculum.
- 2Withdraw in writingIf your child is enrolled in public school, send the school a withdrawal letter.
- 3Plan your yearUse our lessons, lesson plans and timetable to map out learning.

Our promises to families
Honest content
Every lesson and guide shows when it was created and whether it has been reviewed. We never claim our materials meet registration requirements.
Private by design
Children are nicknames and year levels — nothing more. No ads for children, no selling data, and you can delete everything at any time.
Healthy learning habits
No manipulative streaks or endless feeds. Short sessions, real-world activities and plenty of time away from screens.
Common questions
Is homeschooling legal in Texas?
Yes. Since the Texas Supreme Court's 1994 Leeper decision, homeschools in Texas are treated as private schools. You don't register with the state, but you must teach in a bona fide (genuine) way using a curriculum in visual form — books, workbooks or online materials — that covers reading, spelling, grammar, math and good citizenship.
Do I have to register my homeschool or tell the school district in Texas?
Texas has no homeschool registration, and the Texas Education Agency does not approve or monitor homeschools. If your child is already enrolled in a public school, send the school a written notice that you are withdrawing them to homeschool so they are not marked absent. Our Texas guide explains the steps and links to TEA and the statutes.
Can Texas homeschoolers get money from the state?
Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), created by Senate Bill 2 in 2025 and run by the Texas Comptroller, provide $2,000 a year for eligible homeschool students from the 2026–27 school year. Places are limited and there is a waitlist, so check EducationFreedom.Texas.gov for current rules and dates.
Is Success Homeschool really free?
Yes. The lesson library, lesson plan templates, timetable generator, resource directory, practice checks and parent dashboard are free. Success Tutoring offers paid tutoring for families who want extra support, but the core platform stays free.
Are the lessons aligned to TEKS?
Not yet. Our lessons were written around Australian Curriculum strands and matched to US grades by age, so some use Australian spelling or metric units. Texas doesn't require homeschools to follow TEKS, but check our lessons against your own curriculum. Every lesson shows its review status.
I've never taught before. Can I still use this?
Absolutely. Every lesson includes plain-English explanations, worked examples, practice questions with an answer guide, common mistakes to watch for and tips written for parents rather than teachers. If you'd like extra help, our homeschool tutoring guide explains how a tutor can fit alongside teaching at home.
