  4. 4. Which addition checks that 145 − 62 = 83?

    • ☐ (a) 145 + 62 = 207
    • ☐ (b) 83 + 62 = 145
    • ☐ (c) 83 − 62 = 21
    • ☐ (d) 145 + 83 = 228

Answer sheet

  1. 1. 59 — 30 + 20 = 50 and 4 + 5 = 9, so 50 + 9 = 59.
  2. 2. 386 — 100 + 200 = 300, 50 + 30 = 80, 6 + 0 = 6. So 300 + 80 + 6 = 386.
  3. 3. 45 — Jump back 30 from 82 to 52, then back 7 to 45. Check: 45 + 37 = 82.
  4. 4. 83 + 62 = 145 — Adding the answer back to the number taken away should give the starting number: 83 + 62 = 145.
  5. 5. 84 — 40 + 30 = 70 and 8 + 6 = 14. Then 70 + 14 = 84.
  6. 6. 285 — 425 − 100 = 325, then 325 − 40 = 285. Check: 285 + 140 = 425.
  7. 7. 67 + 20 = 87, then 87 + 5 = 92 — Jump 20 from 67 to 87, then 5 more to 92. So 67 + 25 = 92.
  8. 8. 583 km — 200 + 300 = 500, 60 + 10 = 70, 8 + 5 = 13. Then 500 + 70 + 13 = 583 km.
